Green Hydrogen: Powering Tomorrow’s Clean Energy Revolution

In the global shift towards sustainability, green hydrogen has emerged as a promising solution in the renewable energy landscape. As the most abundant element in nature, hydrogen—when produced using clean energy—can significantly reduce carbon emissions across industries, from steel to shipping.

What is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is created through electrolysis, a process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. When powered by renewables, this method generates zero carbon emissions. According to the IEA, switching from fossil-based hydrogen to green hydrogen could eliminate up to 830 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.

Why It Matters

Hydrogen’s flexibility and clean nature make it ideal for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. The World Hydrogen Council estimates a potential 50% drop in production costs by 2030, which would boost adoption and drive the global energy transition.

Major Green Hydrogen Projects Driving Global Change

1. H2 Green Steel (Sweden):

H2 Green Steel is a pioneering startup based in northern Sweden, aiming to revolutionize the steel industry by producing fossil-free steel using green hydrogen. The plant, located in Boden, will house Europe’s first giga-scale electrolyzer—powered entirely by renewable electricity—to replace coal traditionally used in steelmaking. Backed by €6.5 billion in financing, the project is expected to begin production by 2025, with an initial annual output of 2.5 million tonnes of green steel. This initiative not only reduces CO₂ emissions significantly but also sets a new industrial benchmark for sustainable heavy manufacturing.

2. ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia):

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power is spearheading one of the world’s largest green hydrogen projects in NEOM—an ambitious futuristic city being built on the Red Sea coast. The 2.2 GW facility will utilize solar and wind power to produce green hydrogen, which will be converted into green ammonia for global export, especially to Europe. Scheduled for operation by 2026, the project is part of Saudi Arabia’s strategy to diversify its economy and lead in clean energy production. With its scale and international export ambitions, ACWA Power’s project is seen as a key contributor to the global hydrogen economy.

3. Green Hydrogen Catapult:

The Green Hydrogen Catapult is a global initiative launched to rapidly scale green hydrogen production and cut costs. Formed by leading companies such as ACWA Power, H2 Green Steel, Iberdrola, Ørsted, and Yara, the coalition aims to install 45 gigawatts of electrolyzer capacity by 2030. This ambitious goal seeks to drive economies of scale, stimulate policy frameworks, and create robust global demand. The coalition focuses on fostering large-scale hydrogen hubs in regions rich in renewable energy, such as the Middle East, North Africa, Australia, and Latin America, enabling a more balanced and interconnected clean energy future.

4.National Green Hydrogen Mission (India):

Launched in January 2023, India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make the country a global hub for green hydrogen production and export. Backed by a budget of ₹19,744 crore, the mission targets 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of annual green hydrogen production by 2030, supported by 125 GW of renewable energy capacity. It is expected to generate over 6 lakh jobs, attract investments of ₹8 lakh crore, reduce fossil fuel imports by ₹1 lakh crore, and cut 50 MMT of greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Policy Support & Investment

World Bank’s 10 GW Initiative

This ambitious program aims to accelerate the adoption of clean hydrogen in developing regions by supporting the installation of 10 gigawatts of electrolyzer capacity. The initiative focuses on areas with abundant renewable resources but limited infrastructure, helping these nations leapfrog into a low-carbon economy while boosting local energy security and job creation.

U.S. Inflation Reduction Act

The Act includes some of the most substantial federal incentives for green hydrogen to date, offering up to $3 per kilogram in production tax credits. These incentives are designed to significantly reduce the cost of clean hydrogen, stimulate domestic production, and attract private investment into renewable energy infrastructure, positioning the U.S. as a leader in the hydrogen economy.

SSBP (Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform)

SSBP is a groundbreaking industry-led initiative that aggregates corporate demand for green steel made using hydrogen. Backed by major players from the automotive, construction, and tech sectors, the platform aims to de-risk investments in hydrogen-based steel production by securing long-term offtake agreements and encouraging early market adoption of zero-emission materials.

Challenges to Overcome

Cost & Scalability: Electrolysis is still expensive and infrastructure is limited.

Regulatory Hurdles: Inconsistent global standards and emissions accounting complicate growth.

Market Demand: Long-term offtake agreements and cross-sector adoption are still evolving.
