ASTER is a cooperative company of all 41 social housing companies and their umbrella organization Initia in Flanders (Belgium).
Founded in 2020 by the social housing sector, ASTER supports social housing companies in making their property portfolios more sustainable.
Operational since the summer of 2022, ASTER has installed more than 13,400 residential solar panel installations on social housing units across Flanders in just over three years. This represents over 137,000 solar panels, with a total installed capacity of nearly 58 MWp.
ASTER is involved in various European research projects on sustainability (EMS, battery storage, vehicle-to-grid solutions, etc.) and also acts as a purchasing center for charging infrastructure for social housing companies.
In the autumn of 2026, ASTER will evolve from being solely a producer of sustainable energy to also becoming an energy supplier. Under the brand name ASTER energy, it will offer affordable, sustainable electricity to all social housing tenants in Flanders. In addition, households outside the social housing sector, as well as businesses and organizations, will be able to join as ASTER energy customers.
